Northern Lights judo tournament throws down

This year’s Northern Lights judo tournament saw 60 judokas take part.

This year’s Northern Lights judo tournament saw 60 judokas take part.

The action took place at Elijah Smith Elementary School in Whitehorse Jan. 20.

Participating clubs included:

  • Golden Horn Judo (Whitehorse/ Mt. Lorne)

  • Hiroshikai Judo (Carcross)

  • Shiroumakai Judo (Whitehorse)

  • Northern Lights Judo (Whitehorse)

  • Marsh Lake Judo Club

  • Faro Judo Club

Twenty one females and 39 males participated: 10 U8s, 20 U10s, 12 U12s, nine U14s, four U16s and two U18s.

Three volunteers helped hold the matches.

Northern Lights Head Sensei Dan Poelman said the tournament went well overall, adding there were a “few items that we can improve upon as we learned prior and throughout the tournament.”

Poelman added,”I’d like to thank all the competitors and coaches, especially the clubs from the communities like Faro, Marsh Lake and Carcross.
