Calgary Flames goalie Mike Smith is making a return trip to Watson Lake next week for the Watson Lake Pro Hockey Camp.

“My first experience in Watson Lake was truly unforgettable; from coaching the kids, fishing, and enjoying this beautiful part of the country,” he said in a press release. “I know myself and the other players are looking forward to lacing up with the kids and coaches.”

Joining him for the camp will be Edmonton Oiler Eric Gryba, David Booth, who spent six seasons with the Florida Panthers and former NHLer Brent Gilchrist.

More than 100 youngsters ages eight to 15 are expected to take part in the camp, which will focus on off-ice development as well as on-ice skills.

The camp, which runs from July 30 to Aug. 2, is free to participants and is open to youth from Yukon communities and Northern B.C.

A similar camp was held in 2015. Organizer J.M. Sauve said he sees the lasting positive effects of organized sport in the community.

“We are thrilled to have a stellar team of current and former NHL stars coming to Watson Lake. I’ve spoken with the pros and they are just as excited as the kids to be involved in the camp,” he said. “The lasting positive effects this camp will have on our youth in the North will be felt for many years to come.”

Coaches Robin Deitch (BC Hockey) and Martin Lawrie (Yukon Hockey Association) will also be offering professional development for coaches who want to get their Level 2 certification.

“Being able to give back to a small town like the one I grew up in really comes full circle for me,” said Smith, who grew up in Verona, Ont.
