In his first year in the sport, Jordyn Asp is walking away from the Judo Yukon Championships with a gold medal.

“He’s really impressed me,” said Bianca Ockedahl, the coach for the new Carmacks Judo Club, where Asp is a member. “He’s done really well.”

With experience in wrestling – which he will compete in at the North American Indigenous Games later this summer – he has mat smarts.

Ockedahl says he shows up for practice ready to learn and the “breath of fresh air” asks a lot of questions.

Three other members from the Carmacks Judo Club competed. Sophie Harris was second in the U8 division, while Trent Blackjack was third in the U16 division. His brother, Hunter, competed in the senior open division and while he lost his fights, Ockedahl said he progressed in every match.

The Northern Lights Judo Club of Whitehorse won the League Cup.
