The High School Mountain Bike Race series had its second race last night on a brand new, student-approved course.

This week organizers were thrilled at the turnout after last week's small group who showed up to race.

"It feels much better, and much more excitement for the kids,” said Manon Aubert, a teacher from Ecole Emilie Tremblay who helped out at the event. Aubert said the bigger field meant the students were more willing to work hard in their categories to pull off a win. Aubert noticed many more boys this week.

Aubert and her students mapped out the track, above the new bike park on Mt. McIntyre, and using feedback from students, the brand new course was formed.

Aubert says the final ride into the finish, where riders had to navigate a bowl, was suggested by a student and enjoyed by the racers.

The brand new course wasn't the only thing that has been changed about the races. A new points system has been implemented to make sure that racers can catch up to winners. Students are given points from 1 to 10 depending on their performance. The student with the highest number at the end of the races is the winner.

The new points system has put many of the categories in a tie, including the girls, with Adrianna Antilla, who won first last week and second this week, and Sara Burke-Forsyth, who placed second last week and first Wednesday, at the top of the board with 19 points each.

Burke-Forsyth is new to mountain biking, and after getting lost last week, she was happy with her performance.

"Last time I was lost and it took me forever and this time it was like yes, first,” said Burke-Forsyth after the race. "It's cool because I just started biking this year.”

So far Burke-Forsyth was searching for a new exciting sport.

"I'm into freestyle skiing and kayaking and I wanted to try a new extreme sport,” she said. "It's really fun.”

Next week's race will take place on Chadburn Lake Rd. by the boat launch, hosted by F.H. Collins.
