New curling championship to be held this weekend

The Yukon Curling Association (YCA) is pleased to announce a new championship for club curlers.

The Dominion Curling Club Championship, sponsored by The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company, is a new event in the Yukon and across the country, which gives regular club curlers an opportunity to compete in territorial and national level competitions.

Club curlers are those who enjoy the sport recreationally, supporting club leagues on a regular basis each curling season.

This weekend, men's and women's teams from Teslin, Watson Lake and Whitehorse curling clubs will play a double round robin format in Whitehorse.

These women's and men's team will be curling three draws Saturday (10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.) at the Whitehorse Curling Club. Curling continues on Sunday, with draws at 9 am, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. All games are eight ends.

The winning men's and women's club teams will participate in The Dominion Curling Club National championship set in Etobicoke, Ontario for late November 2009.

The women's teams include Team Frank (Watson Lake), Team Strong (Whitehorse) and Team Wolfe (Teslin).

Meanwhile on the men's side, the 2009 draw will feature Team Kalles or DeVries (Watson Lake)

Watson Lake Men's team will have a playoffs on in Whitehorse to determine a club team winner.

Team Smarch (Teslin) and Team Balsam (Whitehorse) are also playing.
