A new soccer league has sprung up in the Whitehorse footy scene.

The Whitehorse Competitive Co-ed Indoor Soccer League will hold its first game at 9 p.m. tomorrow night at the Canada Games Centre after holding a drop-in game last Thursday night to gauge interest.

The first 22 spots are taken to make up two teams of 11, with a few spots reserved for female players to ensure a good balance.

The competitive co-ed league is one of a handful of adult soccer leagues offered in the city, including men's and women's competitive leagues, an over-35 league and a fun co-ed league.

Competitive co-ed league organizer Geoff Woodhouse said part of the driver for starting the new league this season was to offer competitive female players a higher level than what they might find in the women's or fun co-ed leagues.

But another factor was a lot of the men wanted competitive play with less risk of injury that can come with men's league play, Woodhouse added.

"Really, it did come from both sides. In fact, one of the largest groups that expressed interest was the over-35 men,” he said.

Players can become more fit with one hard game each week, followed by another fast game, Woodhouse pointed out.

"There are lots and lots of adult leagues, so I think a number of people are waiting and seeing; and what we're going to have to do is prove it out,” he said.

"There have been lots of people who have said, ‘This is kind of interesting, we'll see if the commitment's there.'”

At the moment, the league will make a waiting list for those interested, and if it gets up to four teams the league will book additional time at the Games Centre.

The current Thursday games will run at a pickup format, mixing up the teams each week.

"You don't want to have the same two teams playing each other every week,” Woodhouse said. "And if we grow to four teams, then we would draft static teams and set up a schedule.”

The season will run from Oct. 21 to the end of February and include 18 games.

The $140 league fee will cover facility rental, referees and team equipment (balls and a first aid kit).

Refunds are available for exceptional circumstances, such as a season-ending injury, for instance – to a maximum of $70 pro-rated – and are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Registration will take place at the Canada Games Centre before game time. (Make cheques available to Whitehorse Legends Soccer).

Anyone interested in signing up for the league can contact Geoff Woodhouse at 334-5119 or by e-mailing gwoodhouse@northwestel.net.

"We're targeting the experienced adult soccer player who wants a competitive – but still fun – game,” Woodhouse said.
