A new name will be inscribed on this year's Yukon Brewing Copper Haul Twister League dog mushing trophy.

Skiing the whole season with just two dogs, Jonathan Lucas captured the honour for the first time.

Lucas finished in the top 10 in each of his five races, finishing first once, second twice and fourth on one occasion. This past Sunday, he finished seventh.

Lucas said he takes special satisfaction winning the league, which is also open to sleds, on skis.

"The races were between two to six dogs, so doing it with two dogs, it feels really good," Lucas said. "It's to show people you don't need a lot of equipment, you don't need a lot of dogs, you just need to go and train and enjoy it."

Lucas finishing first overall in the standings ended Lee Kirkpatrick's two year championship run.

He joked the league championship was a result of Kirkpatrick running her C dog team.

"We were in the position to take advantage of that, so that was great," he said. "It was really good, I have been after that trophy for three years, and I made a joke that it would be nice to just not do it ever again now that I got my hands on it."

Sunday's trail off Fish Lake Road was also in great condition, featuring lots of well packed snow. A strong headwind made the trip back to the start/finish line pleasant on the mushers.

Yukon Brewing also agreed to renew its sponsorship of the league for the 2009-10 season. It will be the league's fourth season.

The top five finishers in each the 12 mile, pet dog, and kids category receive a cash prize, donated by Yukon Brewing.

Other winners included Jeff Diment, who ran away with the kids category, finishing with around 36 points.

The first place canine in the pet dog event was defending champion Asha, who is owned by Lucas.

As a result of there not being enough participants in the league's pet dog and kids category all of the money left over will be put towards the 2009 Reach for the Sky and Take the Beer poker run.
