The Yukon Indian Hockey Association has secured a three-year major sponsorship partnership with Kilrich Industries and Northerm Windows and Doors.
The agreement will give non-profit organization an additional $15,000 each year for its annual tournament, which for at least the next three years will be called the Kilrich/Northerm Yukon Native Hockey Tournament.
"It definitely helps having a big sponsor," said Karee Vallevand, president of the Yukon Indian Hockey Association. "This year it is absolutely wonderful."
The Native Hockey Tournament began today at 7:30 a.m. and will conclude Sunday with the A division final, played at Takhini, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Vallevand said this year's ice fees increased from around $17,000 to approximately $21,000. A good portion of the money, she said, will go towards paying the youth ice fee at the Canada Games Centre. All of the youth games are being played at the Games Centre.
This year's youth division has 10 teams in it, while the jamboree category, open to players 14 to 17 years, has seven teams.
On the adult side, there are 25 teams. The adults side is made up of an oldtimers', B and A division.
Darren Taylor, director on both Kilrich and Northerm Windows and Doors boards, said he it was important for the two companies to support this type of event.
"I think it's just an opportunity for us to give back and ensure there are healthy activities that happen in the Yukon territory," he said. "I am sure the success of the tournament is only to get bigger."
This is the 32nd annual Yukon Native Hockey Tournament.
