Players on the EGT Nanooks didn't let the first 20 minutes dictate the outcome in their 'A' divisional hockey final against the Nannock Warriors.

After falling behind by a 2-0 score, the Nanooks stormed back, tying the game in the second period and then scoring two more in the third frame.

EGT won the Kilrich/Northerm Yukon Native Hockey Tournament's 'A' divisional championship by a 4-2 score.

"It feels excellent," said EGT centreman Willy Masson. "(Warriors goalie) Brian Power played well all tournament and once again he stood on his head for them in this game.

"We put the pressure to him and we gave him everything we can and he kept the puck out of the net for the most part. We just ended up getting those lucky bounces."

The Nanooks didn't begin the game with the same energy that helped them score four unanswered goals.

Warriors forward Derek Johnstone didn't waste any time establishing an early lead for his team. Johnstone netted the goal on a quick rush in the opening minute of play.

Despite the goal, it was EGT that carried most of the play in the first period, forcing Power to make a number of tough saves.

Power's teammates rewarded him with an additional goal, netted with just four seconds on the clock.

Curtis Cardinal scored the goal short-side on a perfectly placed wrist shot. Both Mason and Cory Koski assisted on the play.

Play resumed after a quick break that tested the endurance of the two squads. Some of the players, on both teams, chose to remain on the ice during the few minute break.

EGT finally got on the scoreboard, nearing the halfway point of the second period and ending what was nearly a 27 minute shutout streak.

Tyler Stewart was the team's first goal scorer. Stewart sent the puck into the back of the net after Power made an initial save, but couldn't get to the rebound in time.

Continued Nanooks pressure resulted in the squad's second tally, put in at 7:22. Erwin Ellias scored the goal.

Power's great play continued into the third period. The Warriors goalie was a brickwall, stopping everything from breakaways to two-on-ones. EGT kept coming and, despite Power's heroics, eventually score what turned out to be the game winner.

Koski was the goal scorer on the play, which once again was put in after Power made the initial save.

The Nanooks iced the puck with less than one minute to go in the game, giving Power a chance to get to the bench for the extra attacker.

The extra body didn't do the Warriors any good, as EGT cleared the puck from their zone and eventually scored with 33 seconds remaining in the game.

Forty-one teams competed in five divisions at the 2009 Native Hockey Tournament.

The agreement will give non-profit organization an additional $15,000 each year for its annual tournament.

Other tournament results included the Arrows taking first place in the Oldtimers division.

The Arrows benefitted from a pair of crucial goals, netted by snipers Randy Merkel and Chuck Tobin.
