It was another successful race day for Whitehorse biathlete Nadia Moser, who competed in her first race of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) Junior World Championships on Monday in Osrblie, Slovakia.
In the 12.5-kilometre individual competition, Moser came in the 18th spot in a time of 43:29.2.
Moser was reached in Osrblie via email. She said that the race conditions were tough on Monday.
“The race conditions were not super great in the individual,” said Moser in the email. “It was snowing with wet snow, and in some places, the track was a little bit deep and powdery. This made the steep uphills on this course more difficult than normal.”
The World Junior Championships differ from the normal IBU Cup races that Moser has previously been competing in.
“World Juniors does not include athletes that are older than 21,” said Moser. “I would say that the competition at the IBU Cups is at a slightly higher level than the races at junior worlds.”
Just before the New Year, Moser won gold in Obertilliach, Austria. To win a race Moser has said that she needs to race perfect, but that her race preparation does not change from race to race.
“I have basically the same preparation for each race I do,” said Moser. “Sometimes everything comes together perfectly and sometimes it does not. Most of the time races do not go perfectly, but they can still be very good.”
During the race, Moser was the fastest shooter on the track.
This year I have been working a lot on my shooting speed,” said Moser. “It still needs much more work so I can become consistently quick on the range.”
On Monday, Moser shot 0+2+1+1 for a shooting total of four.
“I think that my shooting speed was good for this race,” said Moser. “I am happy that I cleaned at least one shooting bout. My skiing needs to get much quicker and my shooting accuracy really needs to greatly improve.”
Moser has competed in a lot of races lately on top of the training and the travelling in-between events. She was asked if she is still feeling strong or if is she is feeling tired because of all the events.
“I am still feeling excited for the upcoming competitions,” said Moser.
Three other Canucks competed in the race on Monday. Emily Dickson came in 51, Larissa Black came in 54th, and Darya Sepandj placed 68th.
The top result was posted by Fanqi Meng of China. Her shooting was 0+0+0+0 and she finished the race in 40:06.7.
The other top spots were rounded out by Germans Juliane Fruehwirt and Franziska Pfnuer.
The IBU Junior World Championships run until Feb. 3 with a variety of competitions.
Moser and her teammates will compete in the 3x6-kilometre relay today. They will then have a 7.5-kilometre sprint competition and pursuit competition.
