Yukon speedskaters will welcome their northern rivals at their annual fall camp this weekend.

The Whitehorse Rapids Speed Skating Club hopes to start the 2015-’16 season with a bang when they welcome international coach Debby Fisher to the Yukon capital.

Fisher, a former development co-ordinator at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, will lead a camp Sept. 25 to 27 on the ATCO ice at the Canada Games Centre.

Fisher has helped kick off the local speedskating season for years.

This time, nine skaters and two coaches from Inuvik, N.W.T., will also make the journey to Whitehorse for the three-day event.

“Even though Debby has been to the Yukon many times, she offers our skaters a fresh start every fall,” said Whitehorse Rapids coach Phil Hoffman. “She is very good at working with skaters of all ages and abilities, and she will teach and reinforce the fundamentals so all our skaters will improve over the course of the winter.”

The weekend camp will see skaters of all abilities participate in five on-ice sessions.

Fisher is expected to teach individual skating techniques in a fun atmosphere.
