Local residents will get their first taste of aerial adventure at Mt. Sima today as the WildPlay Monikdo Aerial Adventure Course officially opened at 10 a.m.

The Boys and Girls Club of Whitehorse were the first to go through the course.

"It's very exciting,” said Craig Hougen, President of the Great Northern Ski Society.

Hougen said the Boys and Girls Club were selected as the first to try out the new course because the park is "about family and about kids.”

The course consists of a series of suspended obstacle games featuring ladders, cargo nets, rope swings, tightropes, swinging logs, wobbly bridges and ziplines.

Hougen said they are expecting attendance to the park to get off to a rolling start and really pick up once word-of-mouth starts to spread.

"As soon as we start to get some kids out there, it will spread like wildfire,” he said.

"Until you've actually done it yourself you don't really get it. It's a real sense of accomplishment.”

The park contains 42 elements spread out across five acres and takes one-and-a-half to two-hours to complete.

A day pass costs $42.99 for those 12 and up. Children between the ages of seven and 11 pay $22.99.

"It's a morning or afternoon of playing in the trees,” said Hougen. "It's really cool.”

The aerial adventure course is one of four summer additions to Mt. Sima.

On Friday, June 15, the 1.5-kilometre ZOOM zipline will make its debut, in addition to a panoramic chairlift.

In mid-July Mt. Sima will unveil a downhill mountain bike park.

The adventure park employs 30 staff members who have spent the last two weeks training with WildPlay officials.

"We're ready to go and we expect a busy day,” said Hougen.

Travel journalists who were in town this week for the GoMedia press junket went through the course on Monday afternoon and offered rave reviews said Hougen.

"There was lots of laughter, lots of fun. It was gratifying to see. They really enjoyed their time here.”

The park already has a substantial number of bookings in place for next weekend and Hougen said they are off to a better start than expected.

"It was great to see the GoMedia people having so much fun, that's why we built it,” he said.

"People are going to be amazed about what we have here in the Yukon. This is a first-class product, like you'd find in Disneyland. It's really outstanding.”

Mt. Sima is projecting to bring in over $1.3 million in summer revenue operations by 2015 through the new additions.

Sima recently received $1.3 million in additional funding to continue its development as a year round facility.

Hougen is confident that the adventure park will attract a steady stream of aerial explorers and adventure enthusiasts.

"People who do it, love it,” he said.

"We're very excited and delighted to get started.
