Nine members of the Carole Mullin Dancers recently returned from the ScotDance Canada Championship Series in Calgary, Alberta.
Yukoners Madison Bacon-Traplin, Cara Schamber, Zoe and Moya Painter, Sara Burke-Forsythe, Cambria Fuerstner, Amanda Dendys, Julianna Campbell and Meaghan O'Connor brought back seven medals from the event.
'They had never been to any competition before, so this was huge for them,' said Mullin, the head instructor for the group.
'They all did very well. They're very excited to continue now. They want to come to class even more. It's really cool.'
The championship series is held in a different Canadian city each year, alternating between East and West. Next year, dancers will converge on Saint John, New Brunswick. The judges for the large event, which carries a $250,000 budget, come from all over the world.
There are about 1,000 total competitors of various ages and abilities, most of which are from either Canada or Scotland.
'This is a huge undertaking, it takes a lot of volunteers,' said Mullin. 'Everybody from across Canada chips in money for prizes.'
The Carole Mullin Dancers and the City of Whitehorse sent $200 and a piece of Yukon tartan for the trophy table, which is something they have done numerous times.
Mullin's dance group received full travel funding from Lotteries Yukon.
Meanwhile, as reported in the Thursday edition of the Star, members of the Klondike Highland Dancers were also in Calgary for the championship series and brought back 11 medals.
The Klondike dancers are now off to Nova Scotia for a competition.
