The spring/summer road season started off with a bang on Saturday, as 31 cyclists turned up for the Alaska Highway Road Race.

Under mainly cloudy skies, cool temperatures and winds that seemed to be always in your face, riders had a choice of riding in the novice, sport or expert class.

Expert men had the longest race of the day, going 35-kilometres south on the Alaska Highway from the start at the top of Robert Service Way, and then turning and returning to the start for a total distance of 70-km.

All other categories, also starting at the top of Robert Service Way, turned on the highway just before the Yukon River Bridge for a total distance of just over 45 km.

The sport men's class saw the tightest finish, as the first five riders crossed the line all in the same time. Jonathan Kerr managed the win in a photo finish, just edging out a surging Bill Curtis. Darren Holcombe, Judd Deuling and Bob Bowerman rounded out that lead group.

Just sixty-eight seconds back there was another grouping of riders, also crossing at the same time.

In the women's expert class, veteran cross country ski racer and former world master's cross-country ski champion Duchane Richard, finished with Catherine Sandyford as the first women and only 18 seconds back of the first men.

Dan Reimer, who is always a contender in the men's sport class suffered a flat tire, as did Walter Brennan, but both managed repairs and completed the course.

In the men's expert class, Jonah Clarke rode away from the field six kilometers from the finish and crossed the line some 30 seconds ahead of Glen Iceton, who was followed closely 19 seconds later by Marcus Waterreus.

Special thanks to our timers, Linda Stratis and Marg White, David Knight, Mark Iceton and his better half, Allan Frostad, Bill Curtis, organizer Glen Iceton and Grant Owen for making this event happen.

The next event on the schedule is an individual time trial on Wednesday. Registration will be at 6 p.m. and the first rider gets under way at 7 p.m. The distance is 17.5 km and the race starts at the Carcross Cutoff.
