The Marsh Lake Loppett's chief of race is deeming the 2010 edition a success, once again drawing both recreational and competitive cross-country skiers of all ages.

"We had a lot of happy skiers,” Simi Morrison said in an interview this morning of Saturday's annual event. "It was great. We were really lucky with the weather.”

The race drew one of the largest contingents of participants it's seen in its 16 years with 251 showing up for the event, including 98 kids and 153 adults.

Morrison said she loved watching the mass kids start with children as young as three and four years competing in the one-kilometre event. Simon Connell walked away with the award for being the youngest participant at three years and two months.

It was also a mass start for the adults with the close to 70 volunteers helping out along the trail directing people or handing out snacks and drinks, and at the start and finish.

"It takes a lot of people,” Morrison said of the volunteer contingent, noting her appreciation for all their help.

Many of the skiers got into the fun spirit of the event, dressing in costume. It was Sally Wright and JP Pinard who came away with the Captain Fun Award for dressing up as comicstrip characters Calvin and Hobbes and dancing with the race timers after crossing the finish line.

Also highlighting the event and enjoyed by many was a snow-carving of a bear done by one of the residents of the area for the event.

Meanwhile, taking the Betty Lou Sheardown Award for the fastest 20 kilometres on the men's side was Knute Johnsgaard with a time of one hour, three minutes and 33 seconds and on the women's side was Kendra Murray with a time of one hour, 12 minutes and 47 seconds.

Morrison noted her thanks to all the volunteers, Cross Country Yukon, sponsors and participants.
