The 2007 Canada Winter Games sponsorship division has announced that a consortium of mining companies are the newest Games sponsors.

Nine Yukon mining companies have joined together, to donate a total of $213,000 to the Canada Games Torch Relay.

The sponsorship announcement came just before the start of the Mayo Midnight Marathon this past Saturday. The Torch Relay joined the marathon for the first portion, helping start runners off with enthusiasm. Representatives from the mining consortium were on hand to help spread Games excitement in Mayo.

'We in the mining and exploration industry in the Yukon see the Whitehorse 2007 Canada Winter Games as an important event for the North,' said Vanessa Pickering, manager of investor communications for StrataGold.

'We are proud to sponsor the Games and the Torch Relay and participate in building excitement for the Games within each community that the torch passes through.'

The nine individual sponsorship contributors from the Yukon mining conglomerate are StrataGold, Yukon Zinc, North American Tungsten, Pacifica Resources, Cash Minerals, YGC Resources Ltd., Sherwood Copper, Teck Cominco and Northern Cross.

'We are honoured that this group of companies have joined together to sponsor our Games,' said Piers McDonald, president of the Whitehorse 2007 Canada Winter Games Host Society.

'The companies involved all have ties to the Yukon and we are happy to offer them the Torch Relay and an opportunity to be involved with the communities.'

The Canada Games Torch Relay program will bring a torch to every community in the three territories, leading up to the 2007 Games, when the torches will reunite in Whitehorse at the opening ceremonies.
