Opportunities for Yukoners continue to open up as Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada approaches.
The MacBride Museum of Yukon History today announced that hockey fans will get the chance to meet Ottawa Senators' and Dawson City Nuggets' alumni during an autograph session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 during a hockey history show at the museum.
Yukon's hockey history will be on display at MacBride Museum starting Feb. 8 at 5 p.m., when CBC's Hockey Night in Canada iDesk host Jeff Marek will emcee the free show.
"I think the point of CBC Hockey Day in Canada is to talk about hockey in the communities, so the history show is our show – it's Yukon's history, it's our hockey history,” museum executive director Patricia Cunning said.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for Hockey Day also announced today that tickets for the gala banquet will go on sale tomorrow at Sport Yukon.
The gala banquet will be held Feb. 11 at the Yukon Convention Centre with the doors opening at 6 p.m.
"Tickets can be purchased at Sport Yukon from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday to Friday,” LOC vice-chair George Arcand said.
"There are about 325 tickets available,” he added.
Tickets are priced at $100, which will buy fans entertainment from emcee Scott
Morrison, Jeff Marek, Cassie Campbell-Pascal, Trevor Linden, Wendel Clarke, Lanny McDonald, Western Hockey League players, NHL alumni, the Stanley Cup and special guests Don Cherry and Ron MacLean.
"We are so pleased to be coming to Whitehorse for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada,” said Joel Darling, executive director of production for CBC Sports. "There is a fantastic line-up in place for the gala banquet; this will certainly be a highlight of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada program of events.”
The LOC also announced that there will be a legacy piece at this event via live and silent auction.
"We have secured a number of high-end NHL items that will be up for auction,” LOC chair Walter Brennan said.
"And all money raised through the auction will be donated to the Kids Recreation Fund.”
The Kids Recreation Fund supports children aged 19 and under whose families are less fortunate. The fund assists parents in paying for registration fees, supplies and equipment for their children to participate in a variety of organized activities.

Cunning pointed out that each era in the Yukon's hockey time line will be on display during the hockey history show.
The Stampeders. The Nuggets. Creation of the first commercial league following the war. And the development of the senior league.
"So for each era, we have all the different sticks and sweaters and stories of individuals whose hockey careers represent each era,” she said.
The museum will feature that time line in a wall of hockey history at the Canada Games Centre – along with the Stanley Cup and Memorial Cup – on Feb. 12.
The museum, in conjunction with the Yukon Amateur Hockey Association, among others, is also working toward putting up a permanent display at the Games Centre and Takhini Arena.
Since November, the MacBride Museum has put the call out to collect hockey memorabilia from Yukoners for the display.
Cunning said she expected the response.
"People in the Yukon really love their hockey, and there's some pretty cool (items),” she said, adding that she hopes hockey fans will see the displays and want to add their own items.
"What I think is going to happen is people are going to come in and say, ‘This stuff's really fun, I want to get my stuff in,' because we only had three months to put this together, so once people see it, I think other people will go down in their basements and find other hockey treasures.
"There's going to be an opportunity for people to say, ‘That's my uncle,' ‘That's my dad,' ‘That's my brother,' ‘That's me when I was a kid.'”
