Eighteen teams in four divisions competed in the Yukon minor softball championships this past weekend in Whitehorse.

Players from Watson Lake, Dawson City and Whitehorse hit the field in the Mite, Squirt and Pee Wee Divisions while the Bantam division was made up of three local teams.

It was Pizza Hut pulling out a 12-5 victory over Co-operators in the Bantam final on Sunday afternoon, thanks to some big hits and key pitching. Kal Tire finished in third place after a 21-19 loss to Co-operators earlier in the day.

In Pee Wee action, it was Dawson squeaking past Watson Lake 11-10 in the semifinal, earning a spot in the final against Milligan Sheet Metal. It was another close contest in the final Sunday, as Dawson picked up the win, 11-7. Third place went to Watson Lake.

The visiting teams did well once again in the Mite Division, as Watson Lake and Dawson City dueled for bragging rights in the final. Watson Lake players had hot bats, driving in 22 runs to Dawson's 15.

Fred's Plumbing finished third after losing to Dawson 20-12 in the semifinal Sunday morning.

It was a battle between two Whitehorse teams in the Squirt Division final, as Olson Construction edged out Up North Adventures 6-5.

Dawson City was third after losing to Up North in the semifinal earlier, 12-7.

The championships marked the end of the season for minor softball players, one which was very successful according to coordinator Jean Poulin.

Poulin said registration numbers are up this year, and she fully expects them to continue rising. Over the next couple of weeks, Softball Yukon will be putting on clinics in Pelly Crossing and Teslin, in hopes that more communities will get on board with softball.
