Minor Soccer Toonie Tournament this weekend

Whitehorse Minor Soccer is getting ready for a big weekend of soccer action starting tonight.
The tournament is for the younger soccer players of Whitehorse.
"For the younger children only we thought it was a good idea for a little excitement,” said Whitehorse Minor Soccer administrator Hanne Hoefs. "The indoor soccer season is so long.”
The tournament has been going on in Whitehorse for at least five or six years, Hoefs said, to give the younger players a bit of an incentive to come out every week for soccer.
Hoefs said the short tournament is a lot of fun for the players.
"(It's) a lot of action packed into a short time,” she said. "It's very compact.”
The tournament includes only Whitehorse Minor Soccer teams, but there will be a winner. In regular minor soccer games, a score is announced but they are not archived.
"For the younger ones we don't want it competitive,” Hoefs said.
All players will be given a participation ribbon as well.
"Everybody will get a ribbon,” Hoefs said.
Players are encouraged to bring a food item for the local food bank.
Those players that bring in a non-perishable food item will be given a ticket that will be put into a draw for door prizes.
"It brings a little excitement,” said Hoefs.
The tournament will take place at the Yukon College for U-7 players and the Canada Games Centre for all other ages. The action begins this evening starting at 5:30, and continues Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
After the tournament minor soccer breaks for Christmas, and will resume in the new year.
