High-octane offence, stingy defence and a star youth goalie were key ingredients to a community team’s success over the weekend.

The Dawson City-Haines Junction FC went undefeated en route to gold at the U16 Yukon outdoor soccer championships Sunday.

The full-field event began Friday night and wrapped up Sunday afternoon on the Vanier Catholic Secondary School fields in Whitehorse.

The gold-and-black community team downed the yellow-jerseyed Yukon Pump Sharp Shooters 3-2 in a hard-fought final that went all the way to the buzzer.

Sam Crocker, Ben Lorenz and Ethan Gaw each found the back of the net to give the Dawson City-Haines Junction club a 3-0 lead, but Yukon Pump refused to go quietly into their watery grave.

Daniel Kim scored twice, once on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, and another on a penalty kick to bring the game back within reach with mere minutes to go.

The comeback wasn’t to be however, as the clock eventually wound down and the ref’s whistle sounded.

“Our defence was really, really strong all weekend,” championship-winning coach Irwin Gaw told the Star.

“I think we outscored the opposition 15-4. The kids did well. We train really hard and work on positioning.

“We don’t really have any superstars, but they all come together and play well.”

Despite the training regimes in the two communities, this particular team was formed just for this weekend.

The roster included nine Klondike players and four from Haines Junction – Josh Dulac, Trevor Jones, and brothers Callum and Dawson Weir.

Dawson City-Haines Junction went through the round robin without suffering a loss.

Young goalie Callum Weir – whose main team is the U13 Yukon Striker Selects – recorded two clean sheets along the way.

Following the semifinals, three teams merged into two due to low roster numbers thanks in part to the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay.

“You know U16, by that time lots of them do the bike race,” said Yukon Pump coach Vanessa Younker of her makeshift roster.

“But they really came together and I think saw the potential that they had together and put the effort in.”

The lime-jerseyed All Terrane Mineral Services team took home bronze, while the Shier Eagles finished last.

Meanwhile, Marble Slab Creamery downed The Deli 5-2 to win the U13 outdoor soccer championship.

Ashton Bryant and Dawson Smith each netted a pair in the victory, while Nathan Scully added a single.

“The one thing that our team did – and I think we really excelled at – is we played as a team,” said Marble Slab coach Bruce Bennett. “I’ve never coached a team that was such good friends the whole time.”

Syth Charchun turned in a stellar performance in net, allowing just two Deli goals.

“They played as a team,” coach Chris Ross said of his Deli troops. “I don’t know who scored those goals, but it doesn’t really matter. I’m proud of the whole team.”

Marble Slab also went unbeaten in the round robin, but did tie the eventual bronze medal-winning Sport Yukon team 4-4.

Other members of the victorious Marble Slab team were Seth Bennett, Bayly Scoffin, Cole Wilkie-Hobus, Oliver Paldy, Maya Cairns-Locke, Mikayla Kelly, Alexis Benson, Ljubica Tokic, Presley Bjork and Emily Organ. Missing for the playoffs were Curtis Cash, Caius Taggart-Cox, Anton Meuzel, Orin Gladwin and Sara Charlton.

Lime-jerseyed Adorna Landscaping finished last.
