There was a great turnout for the Whitehorse Curling Club's (WCC) 55th International Bonspiel, with 37 teams participating from Carcross, Haines Junction, Mayo, Whitehorse and Fairbanks, Alaska.

Carcross curlers are planning to play in next year's leagues while Haines Junction curlers have been taking part in league play for many years and plan to continue. Credit to the iceman, Doug Gee, and his ice crew for providing such great ice for everyone to enjoy and test their skills.

The bonspiel offered many different activities, such as a silent auction, a white elephant sale, door prizes, 50/50 draws, a doubles board and a Ford Hot Shots skill competition.

The winner of the Ford Hot Shots was Wade Scoffin.

In addition to receiving prizes from Whitehorse Motors, Yukon Brewing Co. and Edgewater Hotel, his name will be entered in a national grand prize draw for a chance to win a two-year lease on a new 2007 Ford Edge.

In second place was Doug Gee, in third was Steve Fecteau and in fourth place was James Buyck.

The Juniors and their parents provided a hot dog and hamburger BBQ Friday evening and continued to sell hot dogs Saturday and Sunday. The WCC members assisted with a steak and chicken BBQ Saturday evening.

The event winners were as follows:

Men's A: Ray Mikkelsen, Darol Stuart, Wayne McLennan, Dustin Mikkelsen.

Men's B: Steve Fecteau, James Buyck, Matt Pruden, Blaine Tessier.

Men's C: Kevin Sumner, Brian Wasnea, Scott Williamson, Sean Eichendorf.

Men's D: Doug Gee, John Mahoney, Mike Nugent, Fred Walatka.

Women's A: Nicole Baldwin, Ladene Shaw, Lindsay Moldowan, Shannon Tessier.

Women's B: Sarah Koltun, Chelsea Duncan, Linea Eby, Tessa Vibe.

Women's C: Emma Donnessy, Shirley Karman, Barb Hume, Charlene Hume.

Six-enders were scored by the Bernie Adilman and Moms of Juniors rinks. Recognition was given to the Herb Balsam and S. Jones teams who ended their participation early by being the first teams out of the bonspiel.

Keeper trophies and prizes were awarded to the top three winning teams in both the nen's and women's events. Many thanks to the very generous sponsors, including major sponsor Air North. Also, thanks to the Yukon junior teams and their parents and to the numerous club members for their support and help with this curling event.

Hats off to WCC manager Susanne Hingley and her staff for their personable demeanour which added to the friendly atmosphere of the Bonspiel.

Meanwhile, the sixth annual McDonald's Junior Curling Bonspiel was held at the WCC recently, with 55 youths participating from Carcross and Whitehorse.

The bonspiel offered everyone six games in total. The four members of Yukon's junior men's rink each entered a separate team in the event.

At the end to determine the first place winner, Thomas Scoffin's and Andrew Scoffin's teams needed to compete in a shootout, a draw to the button, resulting with Thomas' rock stopping closest to the button.

Here are the results from Pool A, which had 10 teams:

1st place: Thomas Scoffin, Caleb Steele Lane, Taylor Klippenstein and Peter Hanson.

2nd place: Andrew Scoffin, Will Mahoney, Jorey Bauer and Anthony Wirth.

3rd place: Mitchell Young, Meghan Young, Jemma Rosely Clark and Shae-Lynn Boyko.

Here are the results from Pool B, which had four teams:

1st place: Keiran Charron-O'Hagan, Jai Kotelko and Garrett Stagg.

A reminder that the Whitehorse Curling Club annual general meeting will be held Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the WCC lounge.
