McCormick logs shutout to carry Rangers over Flames

Floyd McCormick stood strong to record his first shutout of the season as the TA Firth and Sons Insurance Rangers beat the Aon-Reed Stenhouse Inc Flames 8-0 Sunday night at Takhini Arena.

Doug Cote got the Rangers on the board with a short-handed goal to start things off. He followed it up seven minutes later with another thanks to an assist from Clint Ireland.

Alfred Feldman and Carl Cibert (assist to Erik Von Flotow and Les Luciuk) rounded out the scoring for the first period.

Von Flotow got a goal of his own to start off the second frame with the assist going to Cote and Wynn Griffith.

Stu Mackay found the back of the net 20 seconds later with assists going to Alfred Feldman and Cibert.

Feldman got on the board again with 10:30 remaining (assist to Stu Mackay and Cote) to score the Ranger’s seventh of the night.

Mackay was the last to get on the board with 3:25 remaining to net the Rangers’ their eighth of the night thanks to an assist from Ireland.

This game tied for the Rangers’ second highest-scoring of the season.

On Dec. 22, they beat the Flames 8-7. Their highest-scoring game this season was on Jan. 29 against Yukon Inn.

They scored 10 goals to Yukon Inn’s three.

The Rangers play next on March 1 against Tim Hortons.

The Flames are in action March 2 against Air North.

In the late game, Medicine Chest Pharmacy and EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc tied 5-5.

Medicine Chest’s Blayne Monahan remains the best in the league for scoring, with 43 goals and 37 assists over 38 games.

He got Medicine Chest on the board in the first frame with an assist from Colin Nash.

The duo struck again with 6:18 remaining to put Medicine Chest up 2-0. EDI’s David Wipf responded late in the first (assist to Greg Lane and Bernie Adilman) to come within one before half.

Kirk Price scored a short-handed goal for Medicine Chest to start off the second period and Monahan rounded out his hat trick with a short-handed goal of his own with 14:01 remaining.

A fury of EDI goals over four minutes tied it up 4-4 with 9:26 remaining. Greg Lane, Wipf and Pat Tobler logged the goals with assists going to George Skookum, Tobler, Brian Curie and Bruce Milligan.

Medicine Chest got on the board again with 6:26 remaining on a James Pugsley goal (assist to Peter Kirby and Mark Pike).

Currie tied it up for EDI with 5:22 remaining on an unassisted goal.

Medicine Chest faces Kilrich Building Centres on March 1, while EDI Environmental Dynamics Inc goes against Yukon Inn on March 2.
