The Yukon's own Mary Anne Myers was golden this past weekend, as she set three Canadian records at the B.C. Provincial Age Group Swimming Championships held in Vancouver.
Myers swam three personal bests – which turned out to be Canadian bests in the 55-59 age category.
In the 400-metre freestyle, Myers finished with a time of 5:22.36 to secure the record, beating out her closest competitor by an incredible 2:27.01.
In the 800 metre freestyle Myers finished in 11:04.52 for the record, and earned her final record in the 1,500-metre freestyle with a time of 20:45.38.
"I feel awesome,” said Myers earlier this morning from the Polar Swim Shop, which she owns.
While some people might equate aging with slowing down, it seems for Myers things are only getting better.
"I'm getting faster as I get older,” said the 55-year-old.
Coached by Jim Thompson in the Whitehorse Glacier Bear's masters program, called the Whitehorse Grizzlies, Myers hits the pool four times a week to train to swim at least 3,500 metres a week.
The B.C. Provincial Age Group Swimming Championships were Myers' first meet of the season, and ran from April 23-24 in Vancouver. It was a short course meet, which Myers said is not her strength.
"I'm not a sprinter,” she said.
Myers' success comes on the heels of another Whitehorse Grizzly success. Kim Bennett broke two records of her own at the Whitehorse Invitational Swim Meet over the weekend as well.
One of the records Bennett broke stood for 30 years, while the other was younger, set 12 years ago.
Both Bennett and Myers will be heading down to Nanaimo, B.C. on the May long weekend to compete in the Canadian Masters Championships. Also accompanying Bennett and Myers will be Angie McNeil.
Myers said her success at the short course meet has encouraged her for the upcoming long course meet.
"I feel strong,” she said.
Myers plans to train hard leading up to the Nanaimo meet in hopes of capturing a few more great finishes and personal bests.
"No slacking off,' she said, when asked about her plan. "I'm still in full training.”
Myers said that anyone her age who has a goal can achieve it, if they are willing to put the work into it.
"If your passionate about something and you work hard it's there,” she said. "But you've got to work to get there.”`
