The last time John MacPhail grabbed a hat trick, mammoths were still enjoying the cold weather, but on Saturday in over 35’s soccer action, MacPhail did just that with a well-taken trifecta as his team Westmark maintained their 100 per cent start to the campaign with a 4-1 win over Yukon Info.com. MacPhail is a legend in the Yukon soccer community and his goals brought a smile to everyone’s face but reinforced the idea that this Westmark side may go through the season unbeaten. The speed of the passing and movement of this side is breathtaking, with opposition teams chasing shadows for much of the game.
Graham White got the other Westmark goal and skipper Danny Macdonald hit one in reply to make the game look respectable, the silver lining for Macdonald is that his heavy hitters will be back soon which will make them a different proposition next time these teams meet.
Riexinger heroics help KBS to first win
Thomas Riexinger was again in tremendous form between the sticks, as he almost single handedly kept Pepsi at bay in Klondike Business Solutions first win of the season. Some of his saves were world-class, frustrating the Pepsi team who will consider themselves a little unlucky in not getting at least a point. Riexinger was helped by a masterful game from James McCullough in the heart of the KBS defence, as they combined well in a hard-fought game.
Pepsi were 3-2 up at halftime with a good chance to go on for their first win, but KBS called on extra energy reserves and dragged themselves back into the game.
Running out 5-4 winners. Andy Todd picked up three goals for KBS and there was one each for James Wigmore and the best-dressed man in Whitehorse Bruno Bourdache, while Rob Florkiewicz got two for Pepsi and there was one each for Merhdad Tirgar and Brian Fiddler.
Driving Force get back to winning ways
After last week's humiliating defeat, Driving Force regrouped and put together a winning performance, as they kept their nose in front of Yukon Brewing to claim the game 5-4. The game was a tetchy affair with a few running battles continuing throughout the game; however, there were moments of real quality from both sides as they strived for victory. Eric Murphy picked up a hat trick for Driving Force with one very cool finish when he rounded the keeper to score.
For Yukon Brewing, the man-mountain Iain Brackenridge got two goals and played an increasingly influential game. As the game drew toward its conclusion and lungs were burning, Driving Force kept their heads to see out the win.
Leonard Linklater and Marcelo Gortarigot the other Driving Force goals, and the Brew’s other goals came from Mark Sebekand Martin Farrow.
