Athletes and artists from across the Circumpolar North will have the opportunity to compete, celebrate and share their culture at the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse, thanks to the support of Lotteries Yukon.

Lotteries Yukon, as the exclusive Cultural Showcase Sponsor, is providing $232,800 toward the 2020 Arctic Winter Games Cultural Festival, Program and Gala. The cultural components of the Games feature performances from youth, community and professional artists.

Lotteries Yukon is also contributing $200,000 to the Arctic Winter Games Host Society toward the Games.

These contributions are in addition to the $272,607 that Lotteries Yukon provided to Sport Yukon for territorial sport organizations’ equipment needs to participate in the Games.

“Lotteries Yukon is pleased to support the 2020 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse and help bring together young athletes and artists to celebrate sport, facilitate social exchange and share their respective cultures,” said Frank Curlew, Chair and CEO of the Yukon Lottery Commission.

“The Arctic Winter Games are about investing in our youth and showcasing the uniqueness of northern culture. The contributions from Lotteries Yukon will make that possible,” said George Arcand, President of the Host Society. “It will give participants from all nine contingents a chance to collaborate and communicate through their art forms while inspiring the audience with their performances.”

Lotteries Yukon is mandated to provide funding assistance to projects that support Yukoners living healthy, active lives engaged in and having access to arts, sport and recreation.

Whitehorse will welcome nearly 2,000 participants for the 2020 Arctic Winter Games, March 15 to 21. Athletes at AWG 2020 will compete in 21 sports in four categories – traditional sports, Nordic sports, indoor sports, and ice sports.
