Marsh Lake residents are excited about the good weather and snow conditions for skiers this year as they are busy getting ready for their big event of the year: the Marsh Lake Classic Cross-Country Ski Loppet.
"This is our 16th annual,” says Simi Morrison, this year's race chief. "The Marsh Lake Loppet typically draws a couple hundred skiers out for our event.”
The noon race is considered a favourite of Yukon skiers both for the excellent trails and for the hospitality of the community.
Last year's Captain Fun award winner Paul Sparling, who skied the race in a vintage three-piece suit, is building an eight-inch snow sculpture this year in honour of the race's skiing bear mascot.
However, for the last two years cold weather has been hard on the Loppet and on skiers.
"Looking at this winter's pleasant temperatures and the good snow conditions, our hopes are high for a great race and a fun day. Our committee is working hard to make sure it will be a successful event.” says Morrison.
Many of the key organizers has been involved for 14 years now and in the last two years younger community members have started stepping up. "So many people help out with the race and a lot of the volunteers and skiers get dressed up.
It's exciting.” Every year the Loppet has more than 50 people helping out and baking goodies for race day.
Marsh Lake Classic Cross Country Ski Loppet takes place Saturday at the Marsh Lake Community Centre, Doehle Drive, Judas Creek.
Registration forms are available at Coast Mountain Sports, Icycle Sports and Mt Mac. They are also available at the community centre in Marsh Lake.
