Long-time volunteers first to sign on for 2012 AWG
Ross and Sue Findlater have been staples in Whitehorse's volunteer community.
Ross and Sue Findlater have been staples in Whitehorse's volunteer community.
The husband and wife duo volunteered for the 2007 Canada Winter Games, the 2000 Arctic Winter Games, the 2010 Haywood Ski Nationals and Western Canadian
Championships, to name a few.
And now they've signed on to pitch in again.
The Findlaters became the first to volunteer for the 2012 Arctic Winter Games in Whitehorse next March at the volunteer registration kick off held at the Canada Games Centre yesterday.
Those interested in volunteering for the 2012 AWGs can apply online at www.awg2012.org or by phone at 393-2012.
The first 50 who volunteered yesterday won a free USB flash drive from Northwestel and a commemorative pin.
The Findlaters both proudly held up their USB flash drives after applying to be volunteers.
Ross laughed when asked if he volunteered for every event that comes through Whitehorse.
"No no no no,” said Ross, who was the founding member of the Volunteer Bureau of Whitehorse. "Gosh. That would be a full time job.”
Yukoners are "fabulous, just fabulous” when it comes to volunteering, Sue said.
"I haven't been involved in organizing, so I can't speak to that, but I just know that any event we've been involved in has been volunteer driven and volunteer supported. I think it's a great community for being supportive in that way,” she said.
And Yukoners will need to be supportive come 2012.
Ross said organizers are estimating that they'll need 2,500 to 3,000 volunteers.
"Which would be a 10th of the territorial population almost, so it's going to be a big job,” Ross said.
"It's quite interesting to see the number of volunteers that are already involved in this, there's been a lot of planning. We just got involved this week, but people have been working on this for some time now. It's already consumed hundreds of hours of volunteer time.”
And it'll consume hundreds more.
"Oh,” he laughed, "Thousands more.”
