A hard crash and a broken bike frame helped a new Yukon family from Ontario claim victory in the Long Lake Triathlon Saturday morning.
John and Lesley Carson, along with their daughter Lindsay, were the first to cross the finish line in a time of 1:46:13.
"We swim and we bike and we run as a family, so why not come out on the weekend and have some fun?” said John after the race. "We just moved to Whitehorse and this is a good way to meet some people.”
The Carsons were able to capitalize on a fluke bike crash by David Eikelboom that saw his bike frame break into two pieces.
Eikelboom, last weekend's Yukon River Trail Marathon winner, had been staked to a good lead by swimmer Charles Turanich-Noyen while Tedd Tucker, who finished eighth in last weekend's marathon, was waiting to finish the last leg.
It wasn't to be, and the Carson family claimed the top overall time.
John and Lesley Carson recently moved to Whitehorse from the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Their daughter was up for a visit and they decided to form the team ‘Who's Your Daddy?' for the triathlon.
Lesley swam the one-km route at Long Lake, John biked the 15.5-km trail, and Lindsay took on the six-km run. Last weekend, Lindsay was the top female finisher in the Yukon River Trail Half Marathon with a time of 1:34:33.
Lesley said her first swim in the popular lake was "gorgeous.”
The two have a history with competition and triathlons, with John having completed the Ironman in Hawaii a few times.
"We used to very good athletes at one point,” Lesley chuckled. "We're kind of retired now and just having fun.”
Marc Pronovost was the top solo finisher, in a time of 1:58:38.
"I haven't done this for 20 years,” the 43-year-old doctor told the Star following his race. "I'm starting to feel my age now. But I love it. This is good times.”
Pronovost's two children, Mael and Luanda, competed in the relay portion of the triathlon, while his partner, Isabelle Gagnon, participated in the team portion.
"It's a family thing,” said Pronovost. "The course here is so nice. It was good to be back into this sport. Great awesome times.”
Organizer Ric Janowicz said the triathlon is geared towards recreational triathletes. Historically, a local triathlon association hosted up to five races each year.
However, the Long Lake Triathlon is the only event that has continued on since the association folded.
"After the association folded, it didn't happen for a couple years, and then we brought it back in,” Janowicz explained.
"It's a low-key, grassroots event with the focus meant to be on fun, moreso than timing, but you can do what you want with it. Everybody has a good time.”
Competitors can register to complete all three portions on their own, or as part of a team, at a cost of $20 per person.
Each participant receives a pair of socks, a post-race burger lunch, and a chance at a variety of draw prizes.
While last year's event featured a record 70 athletes competing, Janowicz said this year's race field was closer to 40.
"That's not bad,” he said. "I know a lot of regulars are away, and that's just how it goes. But we get a lot of new people every year too.”
Beginning with a mass start at 10:30 a.m., swimmers dove into Long Lake for a one-km swim, before hopping on their mountain bikes for just over 15 km, followed by a six-km run.
No one came close to challenging Ian Parker's 2010 course record of 1:33.
