It was a nice way to start the running season for Logan Roots, who won the male category Friday at the annual Law Day Fun Run/Walk.

Roots, 15, finished with the top time, crossing the line at 24:05. He just narrowly edged out his closest competitor Ryan Leef by less than 10 seconds.

"I wasn't expecting anything because it was the first run of the season, so I was just out seeing how I do," Roots said.

Roots got off to a great start, positioning himself at the front of the pack early on.

Leef was able to narrow the gap at around the race's halfway point, keeping Roots on his toes for the remainder of the run.

"He (Leef) caught up and then that really started to push me, so then I was really running to my full potential to see how fast I could go," Roots said. "We were just staying together to push each other."

The Law Day Run is approximately 6.6-km and started at the Law Centre on Second Avenue, before making its way onto the Millennium Trail.

As a result of a snowfall earlier in the day, runners had to use a bit of caution while running along the Millennium Trail.

This was the first time Roots has ever won the Law Day Run. He credited his time on Friday to staying active snowshoeing all winter.

"Each snowshoe weighs a lot more than a running shoe of course, so it really builds up your leg muscles, so you can run a lot farther."

Other runners in the men's category included Dan Shier, whose time of 25:35 earned him third place in the standings, while the always-competitive Tom Ullyett placed fourth. Trevor McKay came in fifth, finishing the race at 26:42, less than 30 seconds behind Ullyett.

Running phenom Sue Bogle had the time to beat in the women's category, crossing the finish line with a time of 29:10. Deb Leigh placed second with her time of 31:24 and Sara Burke rounded out the top three, trailing Leigh by a few minutes.

Tanya Astika and Bonnie Love each won the walking category, crossing the line at 46:30.
