Last Sunday's TELUS Walk to Cure Diabtes brought in $11,525, and eight-year-old Cole Byers brought in $8,669 of that.

"It was a pretty cool thing for one kid to manage to raise that much money,” said

organizer Araic McPhee.

Byers has Type 1 diabetes, and raised the money through door-to-door visits and

e-mail pledges. The money will go toward funding research for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

"His original goal was $8,000, so he met that. It's pretty amazing,” McPhee said.

There were 68 walkers at the event, which started at Shipyards Park and went to the river intake and back.

Some families had to turn back partway due to the hot weather, but many families

completed the entire route, which was approximately five kilometres.

McPhee said there were a few conflicting events that day, and a slightly lower turnout than expected, but she's happy with the results.
