Round one of the Disc Golf League Championships opened last night with a strong field on hand.
League leaders Jesse Devost, Matthew Grant and Dan Reimer were in attendance and were the early odds on favourites.
But the net scoring system adopted by the league this year has brought players of all abilities into the mix and several are contending after day one.
Despite finishing sixth in the league this year, Vince Fedoroff showed that he has plenty of game to contend and posted a five under 51 to lead the way. Tied for second with even par 56s were perennial bridesmaid Matthew Grant (who coincidentally finished second in the league) and Paul Getson who shot a personal best.
Much to his dismay, league-leader Devost struggled mightily, missing numerous birdie putts and stumbled to a six over 62. Reimer, third in league standings, also had a rough ride finishing with a three over 59.
Round two goes next Tuesday at the Mount Mac Disc Golf Course, the setting of an interesting battle to see if Devost and Reimer can recapture their form or if someone lurking in the mid-pack like Grand Master Dave Griffiths might just perform a little magic of their own. Stay tuned.
The highlight of the night shot went to Griffiths with a pick-me-up birdie on 18. Other scores of note included Alastair Smith a eight and Isaac Deuling at five over.
The top 10 in the league championships after one round of play are as follows:
