Another Yukon squash season ended Saturday with Julien Revel standing in the winner’s circle.
Another Yukon squash season ended Saturday with Julien Revel standing in the winner’s circle.
Revel won the open A division title of the Yukon Open with a straight-sets win over Jason Kurylo at Better Bodies Fitness in Whitehorse.
Fifty-one squash players took part in the end-of-season tournament last weekend, with winners being named in six divisions.
The tournament draw was one of the biggest yet, said squash pro Khoon Chua.
Revel was a last-minute replacement for Michael Tilbrook after the latter pulled out due to a sprained ankle Thursday, Chua added.
As a result, Revel battled his way from the No. 5 seeding all the way to the top.
After beating Dylan Letang, Grayson Peters and Stephen Grundmanis to reach the championship final, Revel neatly dispatched Kurylo 15-11, 15-10, 15-10.
Grundmanis took third with a 3-0 win over Mustafa Syed, who was unable to cap a near-perfect season with yet another tournament victory.
Meanwhile, Victor Lavanderos claimed the mixed B division title with a 3-1 win over Glenn Rudman (15-8, 16-14, 12-15, 15-10).
Nicholas Terry edged Terri Cairns 3-2 for third.
Ben Craigen earned the mixed C title by outplaying Muhammad Idrees 3-2 (15-10, 16-14, 7-15, 14-16, 15-6).
Alex Jobin beat Grant Woo 3-0 in the third-place game.
Muhammad Javed took the mixed D division 3-2 (15-17, 15-12, 15-17, 15-8, 15-8) over Katherine Krabel in a hard-fought final game.
Chantal Emond earned third, 3-0 over Susan Whitty.
In junior play, Sana Javed bounced back to beat Kayden King 3-1 (8-15, 15-8, 15-13, 15-12) in that final.
Finally, Doug Thorseth beat Jim Gilpin 3-1 (15-9, 15-11, 12-15, 15-7) to win the masters 50+ division.
The Yukon Open tournament comes on the heels of the Div. 1 and 2 squash league playoffs that wrapped up in late April.
