In spite of a lower than expected turn out, the inaugural Bushwacker disc golf tournament was a resounding success.
In spite of a lower than expected turn out, the inaugural Bushwacker disc golf tournament was a resounding success.
As with any major tournament, the Mount McIntyre course was toughened up for the all-star field.
Head greens keeper David Griffiths revamped the course, with longer and more challenging tee boxes for the men's open division, and the idea that par would be a very good score. As it turned out, par was in fact a very good score.
The morning round saw three of the top four players in the league sitting atop the standings. Dan Reimer led the field with an even par score of 56, while close behind were Vince Fedoroff with a 2-over 58, and Jesse Devost with a 4-over 60.
But it was the afternoon round that produced the great scores of the day. With the morning rounds still fresh in their minds, both Reimer and Devost made adjustments and started clawing back strokes.
Playing together in the final group along with Fedoroff, Reimer and Devost began to pull away from the rest of the field.
At the turn, Devost had whittled Reimer's lead down to one stroke after a stellar 4-under front nine. But on the tougher back nine, it was Reimer who was posted the only sub par round of the afternoon, shooting a 2-under 54 and clinching the title with a total of 110.
Devost, in spite his heroics and a superb 4-under 52 for the second round, finished second with a 112 total.
Fedoroff, who finished third with a 118 total, was still in the mix in the afternoon session until he reached hole seven, which is known affectionately as "Sudden Death”.
The double bogie that ensued put him five-back of lead, a gap he couldn't close.
In the senior's division it was Lew Piercey who won the day with steady and consistent play, posting a115 total, 5-over par.
As disappointing as it was to tournament organizers that there was only one entrant in the women's division, Catherine Lamarche was thrilled to participate and go on record as the first female winner in the tournament. Lamarche finished with a total of 135.
Regular league play resumes today at 7p.m., and players of all ages and abilities are welcome.
