On Tuesday, July 30, the fourth annual Pretty in Pink ladies gold tournament will be held to benefit Karen’s Fund.

A few year’s ago members of the MVBC Ladies Night decided to pilot a fundraising tournament and asked the members what charities were near and dear to them. The charity chosen was the Karen J. Weiderkher Memorial Fund.

Tournament organizer Sheila Vanderbyl said members of the Ladies League felt strongly about Karen’s Fund because they all have their own stories with how cancer has affected them or their families.

Weiderkher was a local woman who lost her fight with cancer before the age of 40. After her passing, her husband established Karen’s Room at the Whitehorse General Hospital, where cancer patients can receive their chemotherapy treatments in a warm, comfortable environment.

He also established a legacy fund to benefit women living with breast cancer.

Since the inauguration of the tournament, the Mountain View Golf Club Ladies League has been able to donate about $11,000 to Karen’s Fund over the last three years.

In its first year, the tournament had 70 women playing all members of the MVGC Ladies League. Vanderbyl said the tournament has seen growth over the years.

“Last year we had about 120 women play,” said Vanderbyl. “We expanded to invite any women from town and this year we are looking to get 140 playing.”

For future events Vanderbyl hopes it can continue to grow to the point the tournament can be held on a weekend, so more women from the communities can come and play.

Currently, those participating will play nine holes, but the hope is to grow to a full 18.

The Pretty in Pink tournament is currently about half-full. Vanderbyl said it will be a fun day of golf and socializing.

“We will have snacks and drinks before we play,” said Vanderbyl. “People will also dress up or decorate their cart.”
