There is a new challenger for the old-timer soccer golden boot award.

Adil Khalik has quietly been sneaking up the goal-scoring charts with some high-velocity goals and this week was no different as Klondike Business Solutions (KBS) beat Pepsi 9-4 Saturday morning at the Canada Games Centre.

Khalik grabbed a hat trick and with Danny Macdonald pulling the strings, he has all the opportunities he needs.

Macdonald also got three, Grant Zazula, two, and Kurt Bringsli one for KBS in the rout.

Pepsi’s scorers were Phil Jackson, James Wigmore and Doug Hitch, who netted two – including what is likely the goal of the season.

In the late game, Yukon Brewing and Quest Computers played out an exhilarating contest where the result was in doubt right to the end.

Brew came out victors 7-4 but all credit to both teams as they tried to chase the win.

In his last game before taking up a new role as a bush ranger in Australia, John MacPhail got two goals, while Keith Welch and Travis Schommer netted one each kept Quest in the game. They were also helped by some calamitous keeping by George Maratos in the Brew goal.

However, Brew kept scoring at regular intervals to keep their noses in front.

Jurgen Korn led the way with two strikes, while Andy Todd, Rich Potter, Bob Baxter, Steve Insley and Nathan Bingham all netted singles for the Brew.

Action resumes next Saturday at the Canada Games Centre.

Kudos to Doug Hitch. I have followed his interest in soccer for many years. He set up soccer teams in Yellowknife and in Whitehorse. He instigated the inclusion of the soccer field in the Canada Games Centre and lobbied for the installation of grass turf and much more. I am happy to hear he is still kicking goals of the season.
