The Air North/KK Truck Rentals Jets are still the best recreational hockey team in Whitehorse.

The team earned its third straight A Division recreational hockey title last Friday, hammering the T.A. Firth Rangers 8-3 at Takhini Arena.

Linemates Adam Henderson scored a hat trick and one assist, Kane Dawe had a goal and five assists, and Evan Campbell sniped a pair of goals alongside three assists as the Jets overpowered the Rangers early.

Adam Sills and Ryan Kinney also scored for the Jets in the victory.

Simon Nugent, Clayton Thomas and Travis Rivest responded for the Rangers in a game that pitted members of the Whitehorse Huskies senior men’s team against one another.

The Jets finished the regular season in first at 29-3-2 while the Rangers were second at 25-10-2.

Gold Pan Avalanche forward Mike Arnold was the league’s top regular season scorer this year, scoring 58 goals and adding 56 assists for 114 points in just 33 games.

Jets goalie Rob Young was the league’s top netminder, compiling a 20-2 record and a 3.59 GAA.

Meanwhile, the B Division final also saw a repeat winner, as the Carmacks Rec Board (CRB) Nighthawks edged Goody’s Gas 5-4 in the title game Friday.

Vernon Asp’s second goal of the contest with 1:28 left in the game stood up as the game-winner for the Nighthawks, who finished third in the season standings with a 20-14-3 record.

Cody Mitchell, Kevin Johnstone and Marc Kroeplin also had goals for the Nighthawks, while Phil Urness (2), Mitch Hutton and Nathan Mernard tallied for Goody’s Gas.

The result could be considered an upset as Goody’s Gas finished first overall in league standings with a 28-4-3 record.

Boston Pizza/Polarcom forward Tyler Murray was once again the league’s top scorer in the regular season, sniping 67 goals and 43 assists for 110 points in 31 games.

Goody’s Gas goalies were one-two amongst netminding statistics.

Shay Mortimer went 14-1-3 with a 3.06 GAA while Omid Zagaran was 13-2-0 with a 3.27 GAA.

The early finish to the season was pre-planned, said league president Kinden Kosick.

“Most people go away during spring break and don’t want to come back for playoffs after two weeks away,” he told the Star. “It was a good season.”

League brass – including treasurer Dan Macdonald, schedule and stats guru Bud Arnold, and referee convener Durand Cornett – all did exceptional work this year, as did the referees and scorekeepers, Kosick said.

He added the league has room for more teams next season.
