Jan Polivka wore a number of hats at this past weekend's Yukon Tennis Championships.

The Tennis Yukon head coach filled the role of an organizer, player and perhaps most memorable, champion.

Polivka went three-for-three, capturing titles in the men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles events.

"It was a nice weekend," he said. "I can't say I enjoyed something more (over another)."

Approximately 25 people participated in this year's Yukon Tennis Championships.

The tournament was missing several prominent players in the territory's tennis community, including Kyle Marchuk, Leighann Chalykoff and Stacy Lewis.

However, Polivka said the tournament benefited from a number of new players that didn't play in last year's competition.

The doubles draws featured a round robin format. Each men's team played three matches, while the mixed category had six teams.

As a result the mixed was divided up into two groups of three, with the top two teams in each division facing off in the final.

The women's doubles group only had two teams, which resulted in them playing one match.

All matches were played up at the Mt. McIntyre tennis courts.

The tournament also used a pro set to eight. If a match went 8-8, a final tie-breaker was played.

The pro set format was used to save time and to prevent injuries, since there were a lot of matches being played over the course of the three-day competition.

The men's final was the best of three sets, each going up to six. Polivka met Michael Tillbrook and after taking an early 3-0 advantage won convincingly 6:1, 6:1.

Polivka said he just made fewer mistakes than Tillbrook.

"It probably wasn't his day," Polivka said. "It was a nice game; he's a good player.

He hits the ball pretty hard, but that's the way I like because I run a lot and I am pretty consistent, so that's my style."

This was Polivka's, who was born in the Czech Republic, first Yukon championship title in the men's category.

Earlier in the season, he finished first in the men's group for the Capital Cup, a competition between Juneau and Whitehorse players.

"It's a different tournament," Polivka said about the Yukon Championships. "I like the Capital Cup because I play different people who I don't play all year, except in the winter, we go there for the winter. But the Yukon Championship is the Yukon Championship. You are the champion of the Yukon."

The women's singles final was the closest of all the matches, nearly going the distance. The battle was between Vickie Roche, who just edged out Beth Ellis by a score of 8:6.

Polivka teamed up with his brother, Petr, for the men's doubles event. The pair won their two opening matches, finishing with the top record in their grouping.

The last match in the men's doubles round robin had a final's feel to it because it pitted them up against a team that had also won two straight, resulting in a winner take all scenario.

However, the Polivka's maintained their win streak, handing a 8:2 loss to their final opponents.

Polivka said he was happy about winning with his brother.

Shelley Dixon and Beth Ellis defeated Sheila Senger and Lori Muir by an 8:1 score to capture the women's title.

Polivka was back at it in the mixed final. He, along with teammate Vickie Roche defeated Ken Liao and Sheila Senger 8:1.

Ryan Lane was the big winner in the junior category, defeating Khang Pham and Rowan Evans-Erlicht.

"He played amazing matches," Polivka said about Lane. "If I should say someone who played really well and who improved a lot in the last couple of months, that's him for sure. I am really happy that he played well."

Lane will make up one-half of the Yukon's tennis team at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, which are being held in P.E.I. the final two weeks of August.

Lane's tennis teammate is Kieran Halliday, who has been busy the last couple weeks playing in two B.C. tennis tournaments.

Halliday had a lot of success in the doubles U-14 boys draw, placing second in both.

The first tournament in Stanley Park reunited him with his doubles partner from last year, Alexi Zaroubo.

Tennis Yukon president Stacy Lewis went along with Halliday for both tournaments. She said the doubles dynamic is something he draws on.

"When you are playing doubles you have a little bit of a responsibility to your partner to kind of stay positive and not get frustrated and that helps," she said.

The following tournament was held on the grass courts, which Lewis said benefitted Halliday, providing some added variety.

"It's a little bit tricky on the grass, it's so different," she said. "What you need is different and that was a bit of an adjustment for him.

"I thought it would be fun and I'm not sure he ended up thinking it was that fun, but it was a good experience and it really forced him to work on his serving and volleying. That part was really good."

Halliday played a total of nine matches at both tournaments, which are all in preparation for the Canada Summer Games.

Lewis said they are all looking forward to the games.

"We are definitely excited," she said. "It's so close now, in 10 days we will be there.

It's really exciting to have it finally all happening."
