Mt. Sima, in partnership with Yukon Yamaha, held the 2012 Uphill Challenge this past Saturday.

Nearly 50 snowmobile racers took to the mountain, racing to the top and competing across 10 classes in the all-day event.

"It went excellent,” said Jason Adams of Yukon Yamaha and the lead organizer of the event.

"The course was pretty good, even with the weather not on our side. We managed to pull it off and there were only a few dirt patches by the end of the day.”

Jake Jacobs was awarded the King of the Hill trophy, given to the day's best racer.

Jacobs dominated the field, taking home top honours in seven of the ten event classes.

"He pretty much cleaned up everything he entered in,” said Adams. "He won almost every class he entered.”

A second King of the Hill trophy will be awarded to Darryl Tait.

Tait was involved in a tragic accident while competing in a freestyle demonstration sporting event in Fremont, New Hampshire in October of 2009.

The accident robbed Tait of his ability to walk but thanks to a modified machine, he can still compete on his snowmobile.

"We're also going to give Darryl a trophy just for doing what he did,” said Adams.

"He wasn't just participating, he was very competitive. It wasn't a cakewalk if you went up against him.”

Tait placed seventh overall in the 700-stock category while his cousin Lowell finished one spot ahead of him in the same event.

The soft snow slowed the racers but Adams said it added further excitement to the course.

"It creates more action, creates more obstacles and it changes the snow everytime you go up,” he said. "It made it more interesting, it's a different challenge.”

It was the second time the race has taken place with the last event happening in 2009.

With management changes at Mt. Sima over the past few years the race was temporarily held off until this season.

Adams said he's hopeful the racers will be back on the mountain next year.

"We plan on doing it again next year,” he said. "I haven't had a follow-up meeting yet but everyone seemed happy with how everything went.”

A similar event has taken place in Watson Lake for the past two years at Mt. Maichen and Adams said he's hoping to get a race circuit started in the future.

"We'd like to have an annual circuit and hold the championship at Mt. Sima,” he said.

"It went really well this year, it's a combined effort and I just want to thank all the volunteers that helped us pull this off.”
