Wheelchair racer Jessica Frotten will represent the Yukon at the 2015 Parapan Am Games next week.
Wheelchair racer Jessica Frotten will represent the Yukon at the 2015 Parapan Am Games next week.
The 27-year-old was the lone athlete from the territory named to the 216-member Team Canada on Friday.
However, fellow Yukoner Stephanie Dixon will also serve as the squad’s assistant chef de mission in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 15.
Dixon is a former national-level swimmer with an abundance of Paralympic medals to her name.
While Frotten was told she had cracked the roster shortly after the 2015 Track and Field Championships in Edmonton July 2 to 5, she was unable to reveal the news until last week’s official announcement.
At the national championships, Frotten wheeled to two silver and three bronze medals while representing the Saskatoon Cyclones.
The T53 racer will compete in every wheelchair race for Canada – distances of 100, 400 and 800 metres.
“I’m just over the moon excited,” Frotten told the Star this morning from Regina. “It’s hard to put into words. I’m trying not to freak out, but I’m super excited. I feel like I’m at the peak of my training right now.”
Frotten said the 200- and 1,500-metre distances will not be part of the Parapan Am schedule.
Frotten continues to be floored by the support coming her way from the Yukon. She will join her teammates in Toronto on Thursday.
“We have witnessed spectacular moments at the Pan Am Games which have united Canadians coast to coast,” Canadian Paralympic Committee president Gaetan Tardif said in a press release. “We will continue to build on the excitement and show the country how tough our Parapan Am team athletes are. These Games are a critical milestone for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and Team Canada athletes will be ready to compete at their best.”
The Parapan Am Games will feature more than 1,600 athletes competing in 15 sports.
