If it's too cold outside, you might as well head indoors.

The 4th Annual 40 Below Indoor Tennis Tournament will be held this weekend at the Yukon College gym.

Junior divisions will play Saturday between noon and 6 p.m. Under 18s and adults will compete on Sunday between noon and 6 p.m.

This is Tennis Yukon's only indoor tournament of the year, and they are proud to provide it for Yukon tennis players for the fourth year in a row.

"It's a highlight of our indoor season because it gives everyone a chance to compete a little bit after a long winter of playing tennis in the gym,” Tennis Yukon president Stacy Lewis said.

"It also brings people together who normally don't play together. Everyone likes the variety and mix that a tournament brings.”

Registration for junior and adult events is open until Wednesday.

Those interested in entering should e-mail tennisyukon@gmail.com.

Tennis Yukon has recently been awarded the sum of $20,000 by the Community Development Fund.

This financial contribution will go toward the anticipated Mount McIntyre tennis court re-surfacing project this summer.

Together with a Lotteries Yukon contribution of $5,000, and Tennis Yukon's own financial and in-kind contributions of $5,000, approximately 60 per cent of the anticipated costs are now accounted for.

Tennis Yukon has been actively advocating for the court resurfacing since 2007; the Mt Mac courts were built in 2000, and have never received any large-scale maintenance.

Tennis Yukon received approval from city council last spring to enter negotiations with the city to assume management of the tennis courts in an arrangement similar to those the city has with the cross-country skiing, curling, broomball and biathalon associations.

Tennis Yukon players will travel to Juneau for the indoor Capital Cup challenge March 19-20.

This sister-city challenge tournament was revived by Tennis Yukon in the summer of 2008, and has been played twice a year since then: outdoors in Whitehorse in the summer and indoors in Juneau in the spring.

Team Yukon has only won the Cup once so far, but we are ever-hopeful as we take on Juneau again. So far 12 players are scheduled to go.
