In 1993, the Whitehorse Senior Mens Triple A Huskies took the coveted Allan Cup back to the Yukon and hung up their skates.

After 16 years B.C. Hockey has approved the revival of the team and significant interest in the business and hockey community could see the Huskies be in contention for the Allan Cup once again this season.

"There's a movement right now to get a Huskies team back on the ice,” said Randy Merkel, who will coach the Huskies and played for the team during their final season in 1993 when they took home the Allan Cup.

Merkel says Hockey Canada has approved the reincarnation of the Huskies.

"We just got sanctioned by B.C. Hockey to start up again,” said Clayton Thomas, who hopes to play for the team. "Things are falling into place.”

Ice time has been booked for Saturday at 12 p.m., with a players meeting at 10:30 p.m. at the Canada Games Centre. Thomas says all potential players are encouraged to come out to the meeting in the morning to see if the team might be right for them.

"It's full body contact,” said Thomas. Players must be ages 18 and up.

Merkel is hoping to have mostly Whitehorse residents on the team, but will look outside of the city to fill out the team.

"You like to use as many locals as you can,” he said.

There's still a lot of planning to be done. The team is searching for a general manager to deal with the business side of the team and media.

"Right now we need to get the word out there that this team is 100 per cent going to happen,” said Thomas.

After the tryouts, Thomas says they hope to get a few exhibition games going in November. The club is still deciding whether they should be a non-profit or otherwise.

According to Thomas, the team is already confirmed to play a series in March. In April they will play a best of five series in Powell River which could put them straight into the Allan Cup series to be held in Fort St. John in mid-April.

Merkel says the season will be a difficult one as players have to jump very quickly to Triple A class hockey.

"It's a very high calibre of hockey,” he said.

The Allan Cup is a national trophy. In order to win it in 1993, the Huskies had to win B.C.'s Savage Cup and Western Canada's Patton Cup.

The trophy replaced the Stanley Cup, which had become a professional competition trophy in 1909.

Merkel says there are still five members of the final Huskies team in Whitehorse. Jay Glass, Gord Peterson, Ron Servatius, Darryl Sturko and himself all held the Allan Cup in 1993.

"The Whitehorse Huskies were a pretty big deal at the time,” said Thomas.
