Skis, snowboards and even bikes were featured on Saturday in Mt. Sima's largest competition of the season.

This year's Simapalooza benefitted not only from a fantastic turnout, but also ideal weather conditions that saw plenty of sunny and blue skies throughout the more than four hour event.

"I am really pleased today, the weather is just the best that we can expect," said Guillaume Rochet, Mt. Sima's area manger. "It's kind of even for the community and it should become the biggest event of the season each time."

Simapalooza began with the snowboarding and skiing events, which featured a junior, youth and open category.

Sara Burke-Forsythe placed first in the skier-cross junior event, while Nick McDougall came in second and David Ducharme rounded out the top three.

The Skier-cross Youth category was won by Miguel Rodden, with Jason Zrum placing second and Anatole Tuzlak coming in third.

Daniel Ashley was first in the skier-cross open competition, followed by Laurent Avril and Urs Schirmer.

The Snowboard-cross junior event was taken by Alidas Jamnicky, with Sam Schirmer coming in second and Tim Schirmer rounding out the top three.

Max Melvin finished on top of the snowboard-cross youth category, while Patrick Parker came in second and David Drinnan finished third.

Jesse Coeler was the big winner in the snowboard-cross open competition. Chris Cann finished second and David Pharand placed third.

Coeler, who selected a snowboarding and skiing DVD off the prize table, said his goal was to win the open category.

"I was here to win," he said. "I just figured it would be a fun time and it definitely was. They did a good job. It was a fairly tight course, there was a couple pretty hairy corners in there."

The biking competition attracted 18 participants, who all rode a course on the Bunny Hill.

Rory Schalko posted the time to beat on the men's side, completing the course in under on minute. Schalko crossed the finish line at 58 seconds, winning his category.

Matthew Ireland came in a close second with a time of 1:03.

Kirsten Hogan had the top time in the women's field at 1:49, while Kristy Kennedy was just one second slower, placing second.

Rebecca Gaetz was one of the bikers on Saturday. Gaetz said it was her first time biking in the snow.

"It was pretty different, kind of scary with all the turns and stuff," she said. "It was really slippery.
