Hulstein, Smith-Pearson win road race championships
When 2010 Olympic timer and Yukon Sports Hall of Fame member Marg White is running the clock,
When 2010 Olympic timer and Yukon Sports Hall of Fame member Marg White is running the clock, all participants can be assured of an accurate time no matter how many categories are involved.
And so it was at the Yukon five-km Road Race Championships held on Tuesday.
With sunny skies and a race time temperature of 18 C, the competitors had every opportunity to run season-best times.
And at least two did just that.
The women's side of the event saw 20-year-old Carleton University cross-country ski team member Brittany Smith-Pearson capture first place in the Open Women's division (20-39), finishing ahead of almost all the male runners with a time of 20 minutes, 22 seconds.
Noted runner Larra Daley (21:53) took second place while Cynthia Freeman, with her admiring family looking on, finished just 36 seconds behind Daley in third spot (22:28).
Placing fourth was Brock University cross-country runner Coralie Ullyett (24:20).
In the Masters 2 division (50-59), Debora Kitchen took first place (27:20).
There were a wide variety of category winners in the boy's and men's categories.
The winners included Thomas Bakica (27:04) in Pee Wee (11 and under), Malcolm Muir (25:25) in Bantam (12-13), Sam Bonner (23:12) in Midget (14-15) and Logan Boehmer (18:51) in Junior Men (18-19).
The Open Men's category (20-39) saw perennial favorite Rodney Hulstein (17:47) once again take the crown as Yukon's fastest five-km runner. In second place was Dan Macdonald (20:20), who pushed himself to his best five-km time in years.
The unassuming but speedy Scott Williams (18:54) was one of the fastest runners of the evening and easily took first place in the Masters 1 category (40-49).
With Yukon's fastest 50-something men like Bill Parry not participating in the Championships, Tom Ullyett (20:22) was able to place first in Masters 2 (50-59).
Well-known masters runner Keith Lay (24:13) posted a personal best for the season and finished first in Masters 3 (24:13).
The truly amazing Dave Kalles (26:13), who won several track and road medals at last year's Canada Senior Games, took the Masters 5 category (70+).
The race walking side of the event saw the return of Bonnie Love, one of Yukon's most successful five-km race walkers.
At the Championships, Love (34:55) finished a minute ahead of her closest competitors Jane Haydock (35:44) and Susan Dennehy (36:51).
The next events on the running calendar are Thursday night's weekly trail run at 6:30 p.m. and two events on Saturday (the Atlin Mini Marathon and the Dri Tri).
Also, on Sunday there's the first ever Grey Mountain Summit Half Marathon. Check out the Athletics Yukon website for details.
