The bats for Hub International Insurance Brokers got hot when they needed to at the Atlin Labour Day slo-pitch tournament.

The defending champions from Whitehorse blasted their way through three playoff games by scoring 78 runs while holding the three opposition teams to a combined 10 runs.

“Our bats really came alive on Monday,” Hub player-coach Tarra Mikeli said in an interview Tuesday. “We had a great time but we did what we needed to do to defend our title.”

Kicking off the final day, the Hub pounded the Whiskey Jacks Barbarians 35-4 in the quarter final.

The club followed up with a 18-0 win over the Wombats in the semi-final and went on to trounce BBB 27-6 in the final to hold on to their title.

The Hub lost to BBB earlier in the tournament.

“I think we just really gelled as a team,” Mikeli said of the their playoff run. “We just had to find our groove.”

Mikeli pointed out half of the 14-player roster was from Hub’s regular season team and the other half were pickups

Twelve teams competed in the tournament.

Mikeli noted the return of the reunion team Chilkoot Brewers made up of players who were once Brewers but hadn’t played for many, many years.

“Anyone who had a jersey from the Chilkoot Brewers was allowed to play,” she said. “I do not believe they won any of their three guaranteed games but they certainly had fun. All in all, it was a very fun tournament.”
