Winning is a lot like baking, you just need the right ingredients.

On Wednesday, Home Sweet Home Baking cooked up a receipe for success that helped the squad earn its first victory of the 2009 U-10 outdoor soccer season.
It would have been easy for the players on Home Sweet Home to be discouraged in their tilt against the Yukon News. Especially after beginning the season with three straight losses and then falling behind 1-0 early on in Wednesday's game.
However, instead of getting down on themselves, the ‘Bakers' netted four consecutive goals before the end of the opening half and limited the News to just one goal in the second frame
The 4-2 win was a delight to Kari Unrau, HomeSweet Home Baking's coach. Before the game Unrau gave her team a pre-game pep talk about not getting down on themselves. She said they just needed to get used to playing with each other.
"The sunshine helps and I told them at the beginning, ‘We've lost a couple, it's not a big deal, you are getting used to each other, you can do it tonight.' And they did," she said. "I think they are pretty happy tonight."
The game was played at F.H. Collins Secondary School under a sunny sky that was nice for both players and onlookers.
The Yukon News drew first blood in Wednesday's contest, netting the game's opening goal around five minutes into the first half. Tyler Egglestone was the scorer, firing a low shot past Home Sweet Home netminder Matthew Blindheim.
Home Sweet Home answered back with a goal scored by Zachary Unrau that just made it past the outstretched hand of News goalie Logan Morris.
The goal was followed by a few cheers from some of the parents watching comfortably from the sidelines.
Not even five minutes later, the baking group took its first lead on a shot from the side that tricked in after Morris made the save, but wasn't able to hang onto the ball.
Jordan Runions was the goal scorer.
Samuelle Lemoine and Austin Nowell-Lindquist notched a goal of their own, helping pad their team's lead late in the opening half.
The ‘Bakers' switched tactics in the second frame, devoting more of their attention towards defence and protecting the three-goal advantage.
The strategy worked and the blue shirts held the News to just one goal in the final 20 minutes of play.
Once again Egglestone was the News' goal scorer, converting on a penalty shot nearing the end of the contest.
However, this was as close as Home Sweet Home Baking allowed them to get and the game ended not long after Egglestone's goal.
Unrau said the team's previous losses were close games.
"We didn't lose by a big amount, but it was just the luck of the draw," she said.
"Sometimes you get that one shot that just goes in at the right angle and there's nothing the goalie can do or the defence.
"It's just the way it goes, we have a lot of good players this season."
Unrau said her players were a little discouraged after their third loss on Monday.
Attempting to inspire them, she told them about a Yukon soccer team, who in 2008 lost every game during the regular season before winning a bronze medal in June's wrap-up tournament. She said the message got through to her squad.
"It just goes to show you that it can turnaround any minute," Unrau said. "They are at that age and I think it's natural to get discouraged, but (you have to) just keep encouraging and cheering.
"Kids do the best they can. I think this is a good boost, it's what they needed."
