GAME ON - Players compete in the Yukon Table Tennis Championship this past weekend at Holy Family School.

Whitehorse's finest table tennis players made up the bulk of the field at this year's Yukon championship.
The tournament was held Saturday and Sunday at Holy Family Catholic School.
Saturday's competition was a random team event and included a round robin format. After round robin competition it was Kevin Murphy and Dawson City's Laurie Sokolowski on top of the standings with a perfect 5-0 record.
Sokolowski was the only non-Whitehorse participant, who despite being limited to a wheelchair still is a competitive player in the sport. She is even a member of the Canadian disabled table tennis team, wearing her team shirt this past weekend.
She has played at two Pan American Games and a number of nationals.
This weekend's championship used a different rule system whenever Sokolowski played, including not having to alternate shots in doubles play and not counting shots that hit off the side edges of the table.
Sokolowski, who finished fourth in the women's singles with a 2-2 record, said she always enjoys herself at table tennis tournaments.
"Anytime I get a chance to get in a tournament I enter," she said. "I'm just really happy that they invited me here. It's just been a really good time."
Despite the challenges of playing in a wheelchair, Sokolowski was happy with how she did this past weekend.
"Coming in second was pretty cool in the team."
Sokolowski said the next major table tennis tournament she plans on competing in is the nationals, which are being held in Quebec in July.
The singles and doubles draws were held on Sunday. Ryan Bachli won his second category, taking first in the junior boys event. He won in three straight games over Alex Zheng. Bachli also placed first with partner David Zheng in the random team event.
Malkolm Boothroyd finished third in the junior boys category, beating Kamran Idrees in three games. The final match score was 11-9, 11-9 and 11-7.
Ehsan Idrees, 11, finished in eighth in the junior boys category. Despite not winning any matches, Ehsan said he enjoyed himself and improved his serve.
A 3-0 record placed Kyle Gonder in top spot in the rookie singles category, while Sana Syed came in second.
Edna Knight finished first in the women's singles, while Zara Bachli came in second and Xiu Mei rounded out the top three.
Murphy finished first in the men's singles, beating Mehrnoush Mahdavi 11-9, 11-2 and 16-14. Murphy and Bachli won the open doubles, taking down Mahdavi and Sandeep Sharma in four games.
Tournament organizer Dave Stockdale was pleased with the participation, particularly in the random team event.
"It's amazing because sometimes you come to the club and you get your little cliques going and you play with the same guy all the time and this kind of a tournament it just throws it wide open," he said. "You get to play with somebody you have never played with before and it just makes it a lot of fun."
