H&R Block built up a 4-1 lead, then hung on to win the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association championship Saturday night.
Nikki Belanger scored twice, while Kristen Trotter and Amy Smith added singles to power H&R Block to the 2016
league title.
Tshayla Nothstein led Hvactech Systems with two goals, while Ashtyn Sandulak chipped in one in a losing effort at the Canada Games Centre.
Hvactech lost Lindy-Jo Aston to a game misconduct in the second period.
League-leading point-getter Katie Vanderstelt was held to an assist as H&R Block eventually triumphed by a 4-3 score.
Meanwhile, Belanger also had two goals in last year’s final, won by Burnt Toast over H&R Block.
H&R Block edged Hvactech earlier in the week to earn a berth in the final, while Hvactech needed to beat Burnt Toast to earn a rematch.
The final proved to be a thrilling completion to another successful year, league president Kim Lisgo said.
Lisgo said the league is home to a fantastic group of players, sponsors and officials.
“One important aspect of the league’s success is that while there is a healthy rivalry between teams, players feel like members of a community which contributes significantly to everyone’s enjoyment of the game,” she said.
Following the game, the league handed out four awards.
Vanderstelt’s 37 goals made her the top scorer on the season, while H&R Block goalie Stacey Bowden earned top netminding honours for her GAA of 2.44.
Hvactech’s Helen Christiansen won rookie of the year, while Jill Pollack Co.’s Kylie Bird earned the Atomic Rooster award for being the craziest and most fun player.
