The second week of the Canada Winter Games is getting into the full swing of things.
The second week of the Canada Winter Games is getting into the full swing of things.
Before we look at what the Yukon athletes have been up to, we are going to take a quick look back.
The athletes and coaches from the first week are coming back to the Yukon. Gymnastics coach Kimberly Jones is back and coaching at the Polarettes gym here in Whitehorse.
The gymnastics team brought two JO 10 (Junior Olympic) athletes to Red Deer, Alta., and Jones said they both had really strong performances, even though this was the gymnasts’ second competition at the JO 10 level.
Hailey Sherman and Bianca Berko-Malvasio decided they wanted to take gymnastics as far as possible. In the larger provinces, the athletes will be pegged as high-performance while they are still seven or eight.
“Hailey and Bianca have done community level sport and provincial level sport up until last year,” said Jones. “It was a really big undertaking for them and the success that they had had in the success of their routines and the level of gymnastics they were able to do is just huge.”
Berko-Malvasio hit four-for-four in her events, meaning she did not fall and had a strong two days of gymnastics according to her coach. Jones said Sherman’s competition was a little rougher but she had taken a year off from gymnastics.
Both placed high in the middle of the pack and Jones was pleased with the level of gymnastics they performed and how they represented the Yukon. Not pushing for the podium and managing expectations is something new for Jones.
“It’s been hard for me as a coach coming from a high-performance club,” said Jones. “So learning myself how to manage those expectations has been a big undertaking as well in saying ‘what kind of athletes are sending to CWG?
What are we OK with as a team? What do we want to send out to represent the Yukon?’
“I think both the girls represented the Yukon well and showed confident gymnastics.”
The next CWG will be in four years and Jones said she would like to continue to build the gymnastics program in the Yukon so they can start pushing for medals in the big competitions.
“Now in our club we have two different streams,” said Jones. “We have little kids that commit to a lot of hours and the training program is like what you would see in the south. The others do it on a community level.”
Now let’s see what happened at the Games last night and this morning.
It was a successful day on the range for the archers. All four scored in the top half of their qualifiers.
