The Dawson City Generals used an open-net goal with less than a minute on the clock to clinch the A Division final in last weekend’s Whitehorse Oldtimer Hockey Tournament.
The Bull Dogs took the B Division final and Watson Lake won the bragging rights in the C Division.
A total of 12 teams from across the Yukon competed in the annual tournament organized by the Whitehorse Oldtimer Hockey League.
The Dawson City Generals were somewhat of the underdog heading into Sunday’s final, having lost to TNT in the round-robin.
It was, however, the Generals who drew first blood when Darren Kormendy found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the final. Duncan Harwood tied the match six minutes later but it was TNT’s last, as Generals goalie Daniel Green shut the door for the remainder of the game to lead his club to a 3-1 victory.
Generals Will Fellers scored the eventual winner a minute and 13 seconds into the second period and Dave Procee provided the insurance on an open net goal with 35 seconds remaining, on an assist from Fellers.
The Generals lost the A final last year in overtime.
In the B Division Final, the Bull Dogs finished the round robin with a perfect three wins. The Friday Night Oldtimers, on the other hand, finished tied for second with one win, one tie and one loss but made it to the championship on the tie-breaker rule – their team’s average age was older.
Grey Lane opened the scoring for the Friday Night crew on an assist from Benoit Labelle 44 seconds into the first. Mike Gau tied the game a minute later and Jason Cunning scored what proved to be the game winner midway through the first. Gerard Jim made it 3-1 midway through the second as Bull Dogs goalie Matt King held the Friday Night club scoreless for 43 minutes and 16 seconds.
In C Division action, Whitehorse Oldtimers Number Two opened the scoring at 14:47 of the first on one of two goals by Jaime Cairns. Watson Lake exploded in the bottom half of the period, scoring five unanswered goals in three minutes. Despite a second-period surge by the Whitehorse club that pulled the team to within one, Watson Lake held on to 5-4 victory.
