Volleyball season is still rolling as the Grade 9/10 Volleyball Championships got rolling on Thursday evening at Porter Creek Secondary School.

The larger Porter Creek gym was divided into three courts. The stands were full, the crowds were boisterous and it was a great atmosphere to get the championships rolling.

Not to be outdone by their senior peers, who put on impressive performances during the Supervolley semifinals and finals, the Grade 9/10 players had their full repertoire of skills on display.

There were three games that got the action rolling. The Porter Creek Rams had three teams in action. Their two girls’ teams were matched up against the Vanier Crusaders and the F.H. Collins Warriors. The boys were against F.H.

The Porter Creek boys showed they were capable passers in both serve receive and in free-ball situations. Because their passes were on the money to the setter, they were able to run their offence through all attackers on the floor.

The F.H. boys team was playing strong defence, especially considering how the Rams were running their offence.

They picked up the attacks and were in the right positions and were able to swing back effectively.

Both P.C. girls teams showed serve receive must have been an emphasis at practices. They stepped up on the reception line to meet the ball and effectively got the ball to the setters.

The Vanier girls, like their senior counterparts, show lots of hustle on the court. Regardless of whether it was a perfect pass or not, they didn’t shy away from swinging. This kept their opponent honest as they didn’t send many free-balls over.

The F.H. girls had strong serve receive and weren’t afraid to swing. In transition opportunities, they passed well and ran their offence from all positions on the court.

As the Grade 9/10s began their runs to be named champions so to did the Grade 8 players. The finals for both will be played at Porter Creek Saturday with the bronze medal games beginning at 9 a.m.

The teams from Dawson, Pelly Crossing and Carmacks had to unfortunately pull out of the championships because of bad weather.
